A Church Adventure: Week 29 & 30

Comments

For week 29, Brenda was asked to serve communion, so we were glad to assist and be at our home church. It had felt like we had not been there in about 3 or 4 months, it actually was only two months. It was great to see everyone and worship at home. We also learned that the Church will be hosting an open house in the future to feature the newly remodeled Manse and to meet a Pastoral candidate. The Pastoral candidate will then be preaching on the following Sunday and a congregational vote will follow. This is exciting times for our Church and I am really excited to meet who the Pastoral Nominating Committee feels is a great fit for our Church.

The following week, #30. We traveled due north about 15 minutes to a United Church of Christ. The community we were visiting was also having an apple festival, which explained the skeleton crew that lead worship, they were having a second worship service later in the early evening. But the music was great, the message was brought to us through a children ran puppet ministry. It was a very friendly and comfortable place of worship. I was amazed at how many of it’s members had no idea where Valencia was located. Quite a few families were inquisitive in whether we were new to the area, more so than at any of the other churches we have visited. Worship was comfortable, friendly and quaint.

This week(#31) is a VPC week in our adventure. It always feels good to return to our home location of worship. It will be good to see everyone and meet/vote for our candidate for Pastor and his terms of call.

Music Review: Jeremy Riddle - Furious

Comments

Labels:

I have been listening to the cd now for almost two weeks. It’s has accompanied me on errands in the van and in the house while I have cleaned. It’s a great worship cd. I have quickly learned most of the songs and will be listening to this often. It just gets you moving and lifts you up. What more can you ask of an artist. I recommend this to anyone looking for a lift me up.

I found this video along the way to my review, the links that are worth checking out are below the press release. Enjoy!

PRESS RELEASE:

Vineyard Worship artist and worship leader Jeremy Riddle has announced the release of his new studio album entitled, Furious.  The album is set for release on September 20 via NewDay Distribution.
Riddle began production on the album nearly a year ago with Dove Award winning producer Ed Cash (Chris Tomlin, Matthew West, David Crowder Band) at the helm. Cash’s contribution forms the backbone of the album which also features production from Bobby Hartry, a long time Riddle collaborator.  The project follows Prepare The Way: Live, an album recorded in front of a live audience in Corpus Christi, Tex., earlier this year from Vineyard.
Riddle describes Furious saying, “It’s hard to come up with words that depict the magnitude of Christ’s love – the depth and width of it. Furious doesn’t work outside of the context of love; we tend to translate the word as angry, but I see it as a super-powerful force; stronger, deeper, broader than our vocabulary can fully describe."
Four years on the road as a touring worship leader eventually took its toll on Jeremy, so in January 2011, the former jr. high youth pastor came on staff as worship community pastor at Bethel Church in Redding, Calif. Working under pastors Brian and Jenn Johnson, Jeremy facilitates a worship community of over 200 people within the church.
“My wife (Katie) and I have always had a heart to serve the local church and never wanted to do the full-time travel thing for very long, so it felt like a good time to transition into something different,” Jeremy says. “I’ve developed such an appreciation for the fruit that has been sowed from my life – personally and artistically – by being part of a local community.”
Consequently, several of the tracks on Furious are also featured on Be Lifted High, the most recent album from Bethel Church.
“These songs are a reflection of being part of something bigger than just me,” Jeremy says. “Through some significant growth in understanding and living out humility from a very independent place, I’ve shifted into a place where I can’t even claim this record is completely inspired by me. There are so many elements of the album that could never have flowed from me had I not been connected to people walking out life with me.”

Movie Review: The Shunning

Comments

Labels:

Recently as a family we had watched the trailer for The Shunning on other movies we rented and were reviewing. The entire family mentioned that it looked good and we should rent it, so we were delighted when the opportunity came along to review it for ourselves.

The Shunning is an inspiring movie, the storyline was great. Go check out the trailer below and the links provided below that as well.

We recommend this movie to all.

Beverly Lewis' The Shunning - About the Movie

Before she succumbs to cancer, the dying wish of Laura Mayfield-Bennett is to be reunited with the daughter she never knew. Unfortunately, that daughter, Katie Lapp, is a member of the Amish order. Katie is about to be married, but uneasy about the path ahead.  Now she discovers the secret her parents have kept from her: she's adopted.

The film is based on the celebrated first novel of the best-selling "The Heritage of Lancaster County" book series from author Beverly Lewis. Stars Danielle Panabaker & Sherry Stringfield.

BEVERLY LEWIS - Author of "The Shunning"

Beverly Lewis, born in the heart of Pennsylvania Dutch country, is The New York Times bestselling author of more than eighty books.  Her stories have been published in eleven languages worldwide.  A keen interest in her mother's Plain heritage has inspired Lewis to write many Amish-related novels, beginning with "The Shunning," which has sold more than one million copies.  In 2007, Lewis' "The Brethren" was honored with a Christy Award.
Lewis has been interviewed by both national and international media, including Time magazine, the Associated Press, and the BBC.  Lewis lives with her husband, David, in Colorado.

Music Review: Ginny Owens – Get In, I’m Driving

Comments

Labels:

This cd has a nice jazzy feel to it. I really enjoy song number one: Get in I’m driving, and number four: Rain. It’s overall an up lifting cd with great lyrics. I encourage you to go check out the links below.

About Ginny Owens:

A three-time Dove Award winner, including the Gospel Music Association’s 2000 New Artist of the Year recipient, and multiple ASCAP Award winner, Ginny Owens has sold nearly one million albums. A top performer on the Christian radio charts with hits like “If You Want Me To,” “Free” and “I Wanna Be Moved,” among others, Owens’ music has impacted mainstream audiences at Lilith Fair, the Sundance Film Festival and the White House. Her music has received widespread film and television placement, including songs on the popular WB series’ “Roswell” and “Felicity.” Owens was featured on national television, including NBC’s “Today” and CNN, for her contribution to help rebuild New Orleans following Hurricane Katrina.

Born and raised in Jackson, Miss., Owens was discovering melodies on the piano almost before she could complete a sentence. Songs began to emerge from her fingers as the vision began to leave her eyes and by the age of three.  A degenerative eye condition left Owens completely blind.  Despite her physical challenge, Owens pursued a music career.  Songs provide a window into a world Owens can’t see and an outlet for her to express her thoughts and dreams. Owens’ unique musical style and inspirational lyrics continue to appeal to Christian and mainstream audiences alike.

In 2005 Owens launched The Fingerprint Initiative, a hands-on, non-profit organization designed to “bring hope to the world, one project and one touch at a time.” The organization has partnered with  and raised money for groups such as Compassion International, International Justice Mission and Habitat for Humanity.

Week 27, Brenda was traveling to Chicago and the girls were preparing to go on their own adventure with their Grammy (my mother in law, Lori), and I was dog sitting Sammy. By the time every one got out the door and the dog was dropped of, I felt like just chilling’ with the dogs. Georgie, Sammy, and I had fun.

Week 28, with Brenda and the girls returned from their travels everyone was tired and needed some extra rest to prepare for the return of school. Yes we all played hooky. Everyone was a bit cranky but was in a much better mood by Labor Day.

Random: Hair Cut vs. Groomed

Comments

Earlier this week I went to get my hair cut, it was time as you can tell below. 327344_10150365131370767_528965766_10504724_4303515_o[3]

It felt like I lost 5 pounds. I told the stylist/salon occupant what I wanted done, my hair has been the same style since I can remember. Two things may have happened, she may have not been listening or she may have interpreted it differently than all of the other stylists I have had there.

The next day I had time to groom Georgie. It was not as over due as mine, but it needed done.  As I have mentioned before, I choose to groom him myself to save approximately $120 dollars a year. As I was using the clippers on little Georgie, something got me thinking. Every time I groom him, one thing goes through my mind, if I mess it up, it will grow back, guaranteed.

Oh Crap!!! That must be what my stylist was thinking as she cut my hair. Ok, it’s not that bad, just a little shorter than I am used to. For now a hat will do and it is a guarantee, IT WILL GROW BACK! At this rate, I may be able to save the household another $120 a year and just groom myself. :-) Seriously, I can do what she did to my hair all by myself and look just like my dog…

I’m getting better with grooming Georgie, it helps that he sits so patiently as I do it. It now only takes about two hours, it originally was taking my about three. Here is a shot of me with my hat and Georgie with his better haircut…IMG_0018

Thanks for visiting my blog and have great weekend.

Product Review: LG LBC2250SB Refrigerator

Comments

I feel the need to start this review with the fact that we have always bought whirlpool appliances. They have always been very reliable and very inexpensive to repair when needed. With that said, when our 12 year old whirlpool refrigerator started to show symptoms of quitting on us, we did think about getting it fixed, but decided it was time to replace it. Whirlpool’s current line of refrigerators receive quite poor consumer reviews online. LG’s on the other hand were receiving outstanding consumer reviews online. Home Depot had this refrigerator (LBC2250sb) that we liked online, they had free delivery and it was in our price range. Brenda and I are very visual, so we had to physically look at it before we purchased anything. We set out to all our appliance stores in our area and finally were able to leave our finger prints (literally) on this model at BestBuy.

 lg-Refrigerators-LBC22520SB-Large

We liked what we saw, but they were not offering free delivery, until we mentioned that we would get free delivery if we bought the same exact model from Home Depot.

We are very satisfied with this purchase. We increased our size by only 1 cubic foot, but it seems like it is huge. The fact that a large pizza box, large cookie sheet will fit, and I don’t have to bend over to make sure it is in that perfect position so the door will shut, like we had to do in our old one, is fantastic. It’s compartments in the door are big and can be moved to your liking. It’s door alarm is slick and has been utilized several times already. The Ice Plus feature is benefit as well. It increases ice production for a 24 hour period, incase your consuming large amounts of ice. The freezer drawer is sufficient, it definitely is slightly smaller than our old one. I am glad we have a stand alone freezer in our basement for our larger frozen goods and ice cream stash.

There is one thing I am not super fond of. The finish on the doors/front of the unit. We chose black because that is what all of our other appliances are. I really like that they all match, but I am constantly wiping down the front of the doors and cringe when I see my girls leaving their finger prints all over it…what can I say, I’m ocd when it comes to that stuff. It provides a laugh for the family as I am constantly polishing the darn thing….*sigh*

Keep in mind we have only had this unit for three/four weeks, so the verdict had not quite been reached. I will try to do a follow up review in 6 months or so to reveal the full verdict…

Thanks for visiting my blog and have a great weekend.

Product Review: Microsoft/Sharp Kin Two M

Comments

kin two m

In May I researched phones as my cell phone contract through Verizon Wireless was enabling me and my wife an upgrade. I chose the Microsoft/Sharp Kin Two M. It did not receive very good reviews…but I decided to take a chance with it, knowing that my enV touch and original enV still work and can be my back ups, if need be. This phone’s features were amazing, with wi-fi, an 8 megapixel camera with autofocus, the ability to record video in HD and a stand alone email program built in. It was worth taking the chance on it. After having the phone a month, I did really like this phone. It took every bit of that month to get used to the Microsoft operating system, a very unique and very different menu system from the standard Verizon phones. Unfortunately this phone has one big deficit, it won’t connect to anything “Verizon”. When I say that I mean the applications, like Back Up Assistant, VZ navigator, and other basic apps, that my friend stinks. Especially when it seemed once a month it would need reset, which in turn meant you had to enter all of your contacts back in, manually. The phone would go into this state of cycling power every once and again, so a software reset would be required. Then the speaker at the headset would not work, which in turn was the point of return. I spoke to a Verizon Wireless spokesman and they agreed it was a problem, but there were none to replace it. At this point they offered the Samsung Intensity II as a replacement. It really was not equivalent, feature wise, but at this point I needed a reliable phone. All of those fancy features were just that. An actual equivalent phone, would be a smart phone and I refuse to participate in paying for data twice. I am mostly home and already pay for data here…

I took a chance on the Kin Two M and loved it’s features, just not it’s failure to cooperate with it’s user…

In a month or so I will review the Samsung Intensity II. So far it is a rock solid, simple phone, with a full keyboard.

Thanks for visiting my blog and have a safe Labor Day weekend.
