Christmas 2013

They are limited, but here are a few that were taken on the night of the girls winter concerts. I can't believe how these girls are growing up, right before our eyes.

Bethany plays the viola and trumpet, and really misses singing, she is only able take two electives, band and orchestra. She is doing excellent in both, she even was challenged twice by viola players in the grade above her and she maintained her 2nd chair position.

Bridget just loves to sing and is awesome at it. She has thought about playing an instrument but so far sticks to her vocals.
I have some videos that I am going through, if any of them are suitable and I get permission from the girls I will post them here in the near future.

New Favorite Thing...

My first share is my new favorite thing to do. It is to stream music videos to my Google Chromecast. For those of you wondering what a Chromecast is, let's call it a HDMI thumb drive. Below is what it looks like and a diagram of how it connects.

It plugs into an open HDMI port on your HD TV and then it also requires a power connection that can usually be plugged straight in to the TV's USB port or the small power supply that comes with the device. Once it is connected and setup you simply stream content, videos and music from a device, to your TV. Currently the apps that are supported consist of Netflix, YouTube, HBOGo, HuluPLUS, Pandora, and GooglePlay Movies. You can also mirror stream right from Google Chrome from any PC, which means what you see on your PC's display in one tab of chrome is what you see on your TV. It is also cross platform, Apple and Android devices are able to stream. Keep in mind that to use this device with Netflix, HBOGo, and HuluPLUS you have to be a subscriber to each service. With GooglePlay Movies, you just have to purchase the videos or watch ones that are free.

I am absolutely amazed at how well this system works. There is talk among the tech communities that there will be more apps available in the future. I can't wait to see what is next for this little device. The price of a Chromecast is $35.00, I picked mine up at Best Buy and I have noticed them at quite a few of the other stores I frequently visit, for the same price. This would make a great stocking stuffer for those tech enthusiasts in your family.

Another share, a video I really enjoy, by Phil Wickham recorded live by Klove Radio.

A Church Adventure: A Return Visit and A Worthwhile Video

 A Church Adventure 2
We returned to New Day Campus for a second time two weeks ago and found it to be another great visit. Last week we were busy with birthday party arrangements. I think we plan on visiting a another local Saturday evening worship service this week. It has a been a hectic couple of weeks. Today we are helping family move, tomorrow I want to make some progress in the finishing details of the master bathroom and one of these days I should put up the outside Christmas lights.
This past week my cousin had a YouTube video on facebook. It was posted by iamsecond.com and it was of the Robertsons from Duck Dynasty. It is well worth the watch. Here is the video:

Product Review: Straight Talk Bluetooth Wireless Headphones

southerntelecom.com-straighttalksupport-downloads-STB13WI021.pdf
I picked up a pair of Bluetooth Wireless Headphones (model#: stbwl021) from Wal-Mart recently, it was completely an impulsive purchase. I usually do a fair share of research before buying stuff like this, unless the deal is sweet. The purchase price of this item was $29.99. If you have ever looked at similar devices, prices usually start around $60.00 and go up from there. I bought them expecting the worse, using caution while opening the package figuring it may have to be returned.
I actually have been able to use this device every day for almost two weeks, and have found them very useful. My most common use is listening to my iPod while working around the house or doing yard work. I use them with my phone as well, when a hands free situation presents itself (the headphones have a microphone for two way communication). There has been several days where I have used them to listen to music/podcasts straight for close to six hours. The Battery has kept up with a single charge over night, each night.
These earphones have three multi functioning buttons:
  • Volume Up – Next/Skip
  • Answer/Pause/Play -- Power
  • Volume Down  -- Previous/Rewind
The buttons can be confusing, with a little practice they work pretty well. Short presses perform first functions; Volume Up, Answer/Pause/Play, and Volume Down. Long presses perform the second functions; Next/Skip, Power, and Previous/Rewind.
The comfort level of these headphones is questionable, I would like to say that after an hour, I forgot the device was on my head, but that is not the case. I won’t say they are uncomfortable, they are manageable. They did come with three different sized ear cushions. If I want to hear things around me I use the small set, if I am mowing the grass I use the large set. Connection with this device has been good. I have used it with my tablet, pc, phone, and iPod. Bluetooth does have distance restrictions which I have noticed when venturing away from the tablet or pc, but if the device is on your hip or in your pocket, it stays connected unless you have steel or other metal objects in its path.
My rating on this device an 8 out of 10.
I would recommend this to friends and family.
I was unable to locate this item on Wal-marts website. I found it in the electronics department, in with all of the Straight Talk accessories.
Package Contains:
  • Headphones
  • Small, Medium, and Large Ear Cushions
  • Charging Cable (Micro Usb)
I have no material connection regarding this piece of equipment or its manufacturer.

A Church Adventure: Expect the Unexpected

Every step we take, every breath we breathe, every word we speak, every thought we think, everything we do is a part of a plan, His Plan, right?
Last weekend was no different!! We had scheduled Sunday as a work day, to have help installing ceramic tile in the master bathroom (I will post pictures soon). We had a few Saturday evening church services to pick from. One in particular was making me a little uncomfortable every time we discussed it. It’s website states: “We feel that church should be a place where everyone participates, not just a place to sit and watch.” Personally, this sounded a little intimidating, participation in church for us up to the present has included us greeting, singing, praying in unison and maybe once in a while an amen or hallelujah would be expressed audibly (not by us). Even while we were in our first phase of our Church Adventure, we never experienced any service that deviated too far from the traditional “sit and watch.” The idea of participating or contributing sounded like a small group. We love our small group at VPC, we also know everyone there. To do this when we were visiting a church for the first time and not knowing anyone, made us a little anxious and would undoubtedly be different.
The Hill family were all in, we decided that we would give Dutilh Church Mars Campus a visit. We actually visited it earlier in our Church Adventure, it was shortly after it was acquired by Dutilh Church. From what I remember, it was a traditional service, we were welcomed, we sat in pews, we were quiet, we prayed, we sang, and we listened. Nothing really stands out as I reflect on our first visit. I noticed the I missed recording it in our adventure, hmmm…not sure how that happened.
Now back to the present (last week), as we walked through the doors, I noticed  they had renovated their sanctuary. They removed the carpet and the pews and also installed hardwood flooring. They had a little coffee shop set up, and as I mentioned they did the ultimate swap out, pews for several five foot round tables. That was the moment we realized, they were not exaggerating on their website, they really mean “everyone participates.” We were faced with a decision we had never had coming into a worship service, which table will we sit??? We were welcomed, and a family we did not know insisted we sit with them, they were table hosts/leaders and an integral part of making us feel relaxed in this new environment. The service consisted of singing with the praise band, prayer, announcements and a message/sermon and then we broke into our round table, or small group discussions. We shared input, we laughed, we prayed, and we broke bread together, after the small breakout, we then had an opportunity to discuss with the whole group, and pastor. The service concluded with a song. One thing that I have noticed in this adventure that I personally need, is that the end of the worship service should have music, preferably singing, that can make or break the entire experience, it’s a small detail, but one I appreciate tremendously. The Pastor was relevant, transparent, and also made us very comfortable being there. The praise band included a vocalist with an acoustic guitar, bass guitarist, and percussionist. They had a great balance, with good clean sound.
As we were leaving, as we have always done during this adventure, we discussed what we liked and what we disliked. Everything we experienced at Dutilh Church Mars Campus was positive, something that definitely stood out the most for all of us and shocked me, is that it felt so comfortable.
We will be revisiting this church tonight. We all are pretty excited about returning for a second week of worship.
My Thoughts:
This is all a plan, His Plan. This reminds me that the comfort zone I often embrace, is not at all where He wants me to be. I know being complacent is not what he has planned for me. So here is to: being uncomfortable, looking outside of the box, going where He leads me, even if I don’t understand why or where it will take me. Last week He proved to me to expect the unexpected. He has plans for you and me. We just have to be willing to take that step of faith, or go on that adventure… Trust and He will provide…
From their website:
At New Day we believe church is a verb. Our goal is to create an environment where people rejuvenate themselves before going out into the world and living Christ 24/7. We feel that church should be a place where everyone participates, not just a place to sit and watch. Church is a time where you can ask those tough questions and never feel ashamed to be yourself. We built this service on Acts 2:42, which says that the early church devoted themselves to teaching, fellowship, breaking of bread and prayer. Those are the building blocks on which we base our faith.

Thanks for visiting and reading my blog. Have a blessed weekend!!
